Based on data from the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the rates of worker injuries and deaths has dropped by over 60 percent. Even with these impressive gains, over 5,000 workers are killed at their place of work each year, while 3.6 million more experience a job-related serious injury or illness. In addition to causing physical and financial suffering for affected workers and their families, safety accidents have long-lasting negative impacts on businesses as well. Loss of reputation, legal fees, and increased insurance premiums can seriously reduce the viability of any business that does not take the safety of their workers seriously.
OSHA’s annual Safe+Sound Week provides business owners with an opportunity to jumpstart the creation of their own health and safety program or revamp an existing one. This annual event runs from August 10th through the 16th. Last year over 3,300 businesses took part in this weeklong event.
